On 17 June 2026, the Jakarta Foreign Policy Analyst Circle (JFPAC) convened its fourth informal gathering under the theme: "Implication of War To Southeast Asia: Energy Crisis, Supply Chain, and Regional Resilience”.

The discussion brought together a diverse group of analysts, government officials, academics, and practitioners, including the Head of the Foreign Policy Strategy Agency of Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Special Assistant to the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Participants also represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Secretariat, foreign embassies, universities, think tanks, and the private sector.

The discussion explored the complex geopolitical and economic forces shaping Southeast Asia, with particular attention to Indonesia’s strategic relations with China, Japan, ASEAN, and even the United States. Drawing on their respective areas of expertise, participants examined the far-reaching implications of ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions for the region.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on energy security and the intensifying global competition over critical minerals, which are increasingly essential to the green transition and long-term economic development. Beyond traditional economic concerns, the conversation also assessed the widening technological divide in artificial intelligence (AI) and the risk of developing countries becoming dependent on lower-quality technologies.

The conversation concluded with reflections on how middle powers could contribute to shaping and reforming international rules and institutions amid the gradual decline of trust in established multilateral mechanisms.
